Wahoo Fishing Report – Action at the 1150 Bank

The 1150 Bank is showing excellent signs for anglers targeting wahoo this May. With sea surface temperatures averaging between 75°F and 77°F, the conditions are ideal for this prized game fish. The bite has been most consistent in the early morning, between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, especially during an outgoing tide.

Fast-trolling techniques have proven most effective. We’re running Yo-Zuri Bonitas and Rapala X-Rap Magnums at speeds of 10–12 knots, with outriggers deployed to cover more spread. Wahoo strikes have been aggressive, with multiple cutoffs—so make sure to use wire leaders.

On our most recent trip aboard the Daliken 32ft, we hooked three solid wahoo ranging from 32 to 48 lbs. All hits came within 2 miles of the main ridge at 1150, in depths between 300 and 600 feet. Clear skies and moderate swell made for ideal trolling conditions.

The 1150 Bank is also showing some scattered activity from striped marlin and smaller dorado, though the main attraction right now is clearly the wahoo. These fish are traveling in small packs and are highly responsive to high-speed trolling—ideal conditions for targeting them with precision.

If you’re planning a trip this month, we highly recommend an early departure to maximize your chances. Our experienced captains know where to set the lines and what gear performs best under these conditions.

Wahoo Activity at the 1150 Bank

This week, wahoo fishing at the 1150 Bank picked up significantly. As a result, many boats have shifted their early-morning focus offshore. The weather has also helped, with calm seas and ideal water temperatures.

Best Techniques and Lures

To increase your chances, high-speed trolling remains the top technique. For instance, using Yo-Zuri Bonitas and Rapala Magnums between 10–12 knots has proven very effective. Additionally, wire leaders are a must to avoid cutoffs.

Why You Should Go Now

Without a doubt, this is one of the best windows of the season for targeting wahoo. Moreover, fewer boats during weekdays mean less pressure on the fish. If you’ve been waiting for a sign to book your trip, this is it.
