Striped Marlin Fishing in San Jose del Cabo
Year round private charters from Puerto Los Cabos Marina, with peak action November through March
Striped marlin are present year round in San Jose del Cabo, with peak season from November through March when cooler water concentrates baitfish offshore. Daliken Sportfishing runs private charters from Puerto Los Cabos Marina to Gordo Banks, the 1150 Spot, and the Finger Banks, with local captains who specialize in live bait dropback for striped marlin.
The Billfish That Defines Cabo's Reputation
Cabo San Lucas is known as the Marlin Capital of the World, and the species that earned it that title is the striped marlin. Unlike blue or black marlin which arrive seasonally with warm water, striped marlin patrol these waters all year long. When winter rolls in and the tropical species head south, striped marlin take center stage off San Jose del Cabo and deliver some of the most consistent billfish action anywhere on the planet.
At Daliken Sportfishing we run private charters built around striped marlin all season long. Live bait, light tackle, real local knowledge of where the fish are stacking each month. No shared boats, no booking agencies, direct communication with the team that runs the boats.
About the Pacific Striped Marlin
The striped marlin (Kajikia audax) is a highly migratory billfish that lives at the top of the food chain in the tropical and subtropical Pacific and Indian Oceans. According to NOAA Fisheries, striped marlin can grow up to 14 feet long, weigh between 250 and 450 pounds at the upper end of their range, and live up to 20 years.
The current IGFA All Tackle World Record for striped marlin is 494 pounds, caught off Tutukaka, New Zealand in 1986 and still standing after nearly 40 years. Most striped marlin landed off San Jose del Cabo fall in the 100 to 200 pound range, with larger fish over 250 pounds caught regularly during peak season.
What makes them special
- Recognizable by vivid lavender blue vertical stripes along their flanks
- Lighter and faster than blue or black marlin, known for spectacular aerial leaps
- Travel in groups during migration, leading to multi hookup days when conditions line up
- Prefer cooler water 68 to 74 F, perfectly aligned with winter conditions in Baja
Striped Marlin Season in San Jose del Cabo
Striped marlin are caught off San Jose del Cabo every month of the year, but the action peaks when surface water cools and bait stacks up offshore. The fish are most numerous from late fall through early spring, with January and February delivering the most consistent days. Daliken's own fishing reports show striped marlin appearing in mixed bag trips even during summer.
Why winter is the sweet spot
Cool water from the Pacific pushes south along the Baja peninsula in late fall. Bait schools concentrate around offshore structure. Striped marlin follow the bait and feed aggressively. The result is a high density of fish in zones close enough to fish on a half day trip, with multi hookup days possible when conditions align. Weather is mild, mornings are calm, and tournament season is in full swing.
The Best Striped Marlin Zones off San Jose del Cabo
Striped marlin show in different zones depending on bait movement and water temperature. The captain picks the right starting point each morning based on the latest reports, wind, and current.
Gordo Banks
The closest offshore structure and a reliable striped marlin zone all season long. Steep contours rise from the canyon to concentrate bait. Productive on a 6 hour trip and the natural starting point for most charters from Puerto Los Cabos.
The 1150 Spot
A high relief structure that consistently holds striped marlin during peak winter months. Often the right call when fish are not stacked at Gordo. Worth the run on a full day trip with the right boat.
Finger Banks & Outer Pacific
The famous Finger Banks further north hold legendary striped marlin numbers when conditions align, sometimes producing bait ball action. La Fortuna and current edges also produce. Captain's call when these zones outperform closer banks.
Best Boats for Striped Marlin in Our Fleet
Striped marlin trips reward boats that can move bait quickly, slow troll precisely, and stay close to where the fish are working. Two offshore boats in the Daliken fleet are built for this, with a comfort option for groups that want extra shade and an onboard restroom.
Tiara
Premium sportfisher and our top recommendation for striped marlin. Excellent range to the 1150 Spot and Finger Banks when needed. Comfortable platform for fighting on stand up gear, with the live bait setup we use during peak winter season.
ContactAbamar
Reliable offshore workhorse for mixed billfish days. Strong at running quick to Gordo Banks, switching from trolling to live bait, and keeping the group on fish. A great choice when striped marlin combines with dorado or tuna on the same trip.
ContactHabanero
Comfort option with onboard restroom and shade. Works well for striped marlin trips to Gordo Banks during calm winter mornings. Family friendly choice and a great way to introduce first timers to billfish.
From $450 ContactTackle and Technique for Striped Marlin
Striped marlin respond best to live bait presentations and lighter tackle than blue or black marlin. Our boats run with the right setup for the way these fish feed and fight.
Live bait dropback
- Slow troll live caballito, mackerel, or sardines on a downrigger or surface clip
- Watch the spread for a striped marlin to come up and tail behind a bait
- Drop the bait back to feed the fish on a loose line, then set the hook
Trolling spread and bait and switch
- Smaller skirted lures than blue marlin spreads, in pink and white, blue and chrome, and natural colors
- Trolling speed slower, typically 6 to 8 knots
- Teasers in close to raise fish, pitch baits ready for the switch
Tackle
- 30 to 50 pound class conventional reels on stand up rods
- 60 to 100 pound fluorocarbon leaders
- Circle hooks for catch and release, sized to the bait
The Captains Who Run Our Striped Marlin Trips
Striped marlin trips depend on captain decisions. Where the bait is moving, which side of the bank to work, when to pull lines and reset, when to drop a live bait. These calls come from decades on the water off San Jose del Cabo.
Pancho
One of our most experienced offshore captains and a specialist in reading bait movement. Pancho excels at the live bait dropback technique that defines striped marlin fishing, and he knows where the fish stack each month of the season.
Hollywood
Second generation fisherman born and raised in San Jose del Cabo, with over 35 years on these waters and serious tournament experience including Bisbee's Black and Blue. Bilingual, calm under pressure, and the captain you want for high stakes striped marlin days.
Ulices
Tournament minded offshore captain with a track record on billfish across all three species. Ulices runs efficient days, knows when to commit to a zone and when to move, and consistently puts groups on multiple shots when the conditions are right.
Catch and Release Policy
Striped marlin populations in the eastern Pacific are managed but the species faces pressure across its range. At Daliken Sportfishing we practice catch and release on all billfish by default. Circle hooks, quick handling boatside, careful release to send the fish back strong.
Mexican sportfishing regulations allow one billfish per angler per day if a fish is kept, but our standard is release on every striped marlin unless there is a specific reason otherwise. Conservation today is the reason the fishery still produces world class days twenty years from now.
