Los Cabos fishing report June 9

The summer bite is officially on out of Puerto Los Cabos Marina. Tuesday delivered exactly what the early June pattern has been promising: yellowfin tuna lighting up the run from Vinorama to San Luis, striped marlin getting multiple shots per day around Gordo Banks, and quality dorado picked off the troll while we worked the bait schools. Water temperatures are climbing, blue water is everywhere, and the fishery is moving into its most dynamic stretch of the year.

Conditions today are the textbook summer pattern in Los Cabos. The Sea of Cortez is dropping into the 78 degree range with blue water everywhere, live sardine schools are abundant and the bait size has been excellent. Calm mornings give us the run we need before the south wind picks up around midday, and the offshore grounds are producing consistently.

The Strategy

With multiple species firing in different zones, today was about choosing the right window and running tight to it. Two productive game plans this week, both delivering for clients out of the marina.

Tuna Run to Vinorama

The yellowfin tuna bite from Vinorama down to San Luis is the standout right now. We slow-troll and drift live sardines along the bait schools, with most fish in the 10 to 20 lb class and a good number pushing into the 30 lb range. Live bait is abundant, sardines are big, and the action stays steady throughout the morning.

Gordo Banks for Marlin

Striped marlin have moved around Gordo Banks and north toward Cabo, with boats getting multiple shots and releases per day. A trolling spread with skirted lures and rigged ballyhoo on 80 to 130 lb gear is the play, with a pitch rod loaded with a live caballito ready for any marlin that pops up on the teasers. Early-season blue marlin are also starting to appear on temperature breaks.

Dorado are part of both plans. While we worked the tuna schools we picked off quality mahi mahi on the troll, and the same was true for the boats running the marlin spread. Roosterfish are also producing inshore for groups that want to start the morning along the beach line before pushing offshore.

Captain's Recommendation

Live Bait and the Vinorama Run

The single best move right now is to load up on live sardines at the marina and run for the tuna line from Vinorama to San Luis. The sardines are big, the bait is plentiful, and the tuna are eating. While you are out there the spread will pick off dorado, and if you want a shot at striped marlin we can push north toward Gordo Banks where the marlin bite has been consistent. Leave the marina at 6:10 am, fish hard through the morning, and you can come home with a real summer mixed bag.

Tackle and Gear

What We Ran Today

  • Tuna setup: 30 to 50 lb test for the 10 to 30 lb class fish, live sardines slow-trolled or drifted, plus cedar plugs and small feathers as backup on the troll
  • Marlin setup: 80 to 130 lb test rods with 200 to 400 lb leaders, rigged ballyhoo and skirted trolling heads, plus a pitch rod loaded with a live caballito ready to drop
  • Dorado setup: 30 to 50 lb test, 40 to 60 lb leaders, small skirted lures in pink, green and yellow heads picking off fish off the troll
  • Teasers: daisy chains and squid teasers pulled tight in the wash to bring billfish up
  • Inshore option: spinning gear with live mullet and sardines for roosterfish along the East Cape beach line at first light
  • Trolling speeds: 5 to 6 knots in the bait schools, 7 to 8 knots on the search runs between zones

Tuna hot from Vinorama, marlin at Gordo Banks, dorado on the troll. This is the early summer pattern we wait all year for in Los Cabos, and it is delivering right now.
