Sailfish Fishing
San Jose del Cabo
Private offshore fishing charters from Puerto Los Cabos Marina targeting Pacific Sailfish. Experienced local captains, fast boats, and your best shot at acrobatic billfish action.
Sailfish are one of the most spectacular billfish targets in San Jose del Cabo waters. Famous for explosive jumps, blistering runs, and visible sail-shaped dorsal fins above the water, they deliver some of the most rewarding offshore action in the Sea of Cortez and Pacific side of Baja.
Pacific Sailfish in Cabo Waters
Pacific Sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) are smaller than their Atlantic cousins but no less spectacular. Adults typically run 50 to 100 pounds in Cabo waters, with occasional fish exceeding 120 pounds. Their massive dorsal fin (the "sail") gives them their name and serves as both a hunting tool and visual signal.
What makes Sailfish special
- One of the fastest fish in the ocean, capable of bursts over 60 mph
- Spectacular surface strikes followed by acrobatic jumps and head shakes
- Often "tail walk" across the water during fights
- Highly visible when feeding - sails appear above surface in calm conditions
- Catch and release standard in Cabo for conservation
Where they live
Sailfish prefer offshore waters with temperatures between 75F and 85F. In San Jose del Cabo, captains target the offshore drop-off zones, current breaks, and areas where bait concentrations attract pelagic predators. They're often found alongside Striped Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna during peak season.
Best Time for Sailfish in San Jose del Cabo
Sailfish are present in Cabo waters most of the year, but peak activity typically aligns with stable weather, warm water temperatures, and strong bait concentrations.
Why these months matter
Water temperatures hit the sweet spot for Sailfish during the May to November window, when surface temps consistently exceed 78F. This corresponds with bait fish migrations and concentrations along the offshore drop-offs. The early morning window offers the highest activity, which is why standard departures are scheduled around 6:30 AM check-in.
Where We Target Sailfish
From Puerto Los Cabos Marina, our captains know the three primary zones where Sailfish concentrate seasonally. Each requires different strategies based on conditions on the day.
Gordo Banks
The seamount system that defines San Jose del Cabo's offshore fishery. Productive for billfish year-round, with Sailfish appearing alongside Marlin and Tuna during peak season.
Offshore Drop-Off
The deep water continental shelf edge. Premier ground for trophy Sailfish during the warm months when bait concentrations move offshore.
Temperature Breaks
The convergence zones where warmer Sea of Cortez water meets cooler Pacific currents. Bait concentrates here, and Sailfish follow.
