Fishing Report – Tuna Bite in San Luis
This week in the San Luis area, off the coast of San José del Cabo, we’ve had excellent yellowfin tuna activity. Fish are ranging from 30 to 40 pounds, showing strong surface action and aggressive bites.
Technique & Gear
Fishing has been productive while drifting with the current, presenting bait naturally. We’ve used:
- Bait: Live sardines and squid chunks
- Line: 40 lb fluorocarbon leader
- Rod: 30 lb class spinning or conventional rods
How the Tuna Are Biting
The tuna are showing aggressive surface activity, especially during the early morning from 6:15 AM to 9:00 AM. We’re seeing frequent boils and bird activity offshore, signaling active bait balls. Sardines are the most effective, but chunked squid is also working when drifted naturally in the current.
It’s important to keep chumming consistently while drifting. Slow presentations with minimal hardware are producing the best results. Hook size has been adjusted to match the bait, with circle hooks in size 2/0 to 3/0 working well with fluorocarbon leaders to avoid spooking fish in the clear water.
Water Clarity & Conditions
Current visibility is excellent – about 25 to 30 feet in most areas around San Luis. Seas have been relatively calm with light swells under 2 feet, and no port restrictions. Skies have remained mostly sunny with light variable winds under 10 knots, making for ideal fishing weather.
Water color is a beautiful blue-green, and temperatures remain in the sweet spot for yellowfin feeding behavior. We recommend early departures to maximize activity before the sun heats the surface layers too much.
Recommended Tackle Setup
We’re using 30–40 lb class rods with strong backbone and fast tips to handle these powerful fish. Reels like the Shimano Talica 12 II or Penn Fathom 25N paired with high-capacity braid and a fluorocarbon leader are perfect for this type of work.
Live bait tanks on our pangas and cruisers are fully stocked before heading out, and all gear is pre-rigged for quick deployment upon reaching the target area.
What Boats Are Best This Week?
With the current conditions and distance to the bite zone, we recommend either:
- ✅ Super Pangas 26ft for light and fast drift setups (2–3 anglers)
- ✅ Convertible 32–35ft for comfort, shade, and multiple setups (up to 4–5 anglers)
Each boat includes ice, water, live bait well, and shaded seating. For larger groups or extended action, the 38ft YNOKT is also available fully equipped with outriggers and a large cockpit.
Daliken Pro Tip of the Week
“If the fish go down, don’t leave too early. Many times they resurface mid-morning about 200 yards from the original boil. Stay alert, and use binoculars to track birds working the area.”
