Tuesday delivered another solid day on the water out of Puerto Los Cabos Marina. We are deep into the spring window in Los Cabos, with striped marlin still active offshore, dorado building along current edges and yellowfin tuna starting to fill the offshore banks. Conditions today lined up well for an early run and a productive bite.
Today's Conditions
Mornings remain the most productive window of the day right now. Calm conditions at sunrise give the captains a clean, fast run out to the offshore zones before the afternoon breeze fills in from the south. Bait concentrations along the coastal banks are building consistently as we move deeper into the spring to early summer transition.
The Strategy
For Tuesday's run our crew worked the established offshore pattern that has been producing for the Los Cabos fleet through May. Two main approaches, adjusted in real time based on what the water was telling us.
Trolling the Spread
A full trolling spread of skirted lures and rigged ballyhoo, worked along current breaks, color changes and structure. This is the workhorse setup for marlin and dorado when fish are not visible on top, and it covers more water in less time.
Live Bait When Marlin Show
When striped marlin came up to investigate teasers or were spotted tailing on the surface, we switched to a pitched live bait. Caballito and mackerel are still the go-to options. Quiet boat positioning is everything on that cast.
The productive zones inside reach of a single-day trip out of Puerto Los Cabos right now include the Gordo Banks, Iman Bank, La Fortuna and the edge north of the marina. Boats targeting tuna are pushing toward the offshore banks where bait schools are concentrating.
Book the Early Departure and Stay Patient
Right now in Los Cabos the bite window is front-loaded. The morning push out of Puerto Los Cabos at 6:10 am puts you on the water during the calmest, most productive hours. Once you are in the zone, do not rush. Keep good baits in the water, let the captain read the signs, and the day usually pays off. Some of our best fish this season have come on the day's last pass before turning home.
Tackle and Gear
What We Run on Board
- Marlin setup: 80 to 130 lb test rods, 200 to 400 lb leaders, ballyhoo rigs and skirted trolling heads
- Tuna setup: 50 to 80 lb test, cedar plugs and feathers for trolling, live sardines and squid strips when fish get picky
- Dorado setup: 30 to 50 lb test, 40 to 60 lb leaders, small skirted lures, pink heads have been producing
- Inshore roosterfish: spinning gear with poppers and live sardines along the East Cape beach line at first light
- On every boat: rigged dead baits ready to drop back when a marlin shows, plus a clean pitch rod with live bait standing by
Los Cabos in May is one of the most versatile months of the year. Striped marlin are still in the peak window, dorado are building, and yellowfin tuna are starting to fill the offshore banks. If you want a real shot at a mixed-bag day, the next few weeks are it.
