Fortuna Fishing Report – Tuna Still Biting, Water Shifting, Dorado + Striped Marlin Showing
Quick update from our local captains: tuna action continues on the Fortuna side, the water is starting to change, and we’re already seeing more striped marlin as their season begins. Mackerel are moving onto the San José banks, and roosterfish are active close to the marina for light-tackle fun.
The best plan right now is an early departure: start on the Fortuna side for tuna, check water color breaks, then move toward San José banks where mackerel are stacking. Expect chances at 30 lb dorado, the first consistent striped marlin, and roosterfish action within 2 miles of the marina.
Bite Update
- Tuna: the bite continues on the Fortuna side — strong opportunities when you find the right water and bird activity.
- Dorado (Mahi Mahi): we’re seeing good-sized fish, around 30 lb class.
- Striped Marlin: they’re starting to show up more consistently — this is the beginning of their season.
- Mackerel: moving onto the San José banks, which can trigger better action for multiple species.
- Roosterfish: nearshore action within ~2 miles of the marina, around 10 lb class — fun, aggressive bites on light tackle.
Where to Fish
- Fortuna side: start here for tuna, especially if you see birds, foamers, or temperature/current edges.
- San José banks: great area to work mackerel and structure for mixed opportunities.
- Nearshore line (2 miles): roosterfish action close to the marina — perfect if you want more bites and more casting.

Great report. I saw that this week you found yellowfin and dorado near Gordo Banks. With the current conditions, would you recommend going out on the Super Panga 26ft, or is the 33ft a better option for comfort departing from San José del Cabo?
Thanks for your question, Mark. With the current sea conditions, the Super Panga 26ft is still a great choice when winds stay below 12–15 knots, especially if you want a more active and dynamic fishing experience.
If the forecast shows stronger winds or choppier seas, we recommend the ABAMAR 33ft, as it provides more stability, full shade, and greater comfort on the run to Gordo Banks.
In both cases, we depart early in the morning from Puerto Los Cabos to take advantage of the best bite window and maximize opportunities for yellowfin and dorado.
