Los Cabos Fishing Report – Striped Marlin & Tuna near Iman Bank & Chawuitas

Los Cabos Fishing Report – Striped Marlin & Tuna near Iman Bank & Chawuitas

This week we’ve had consistent action fishing around Iman Bank and Chawuitas, in front of Palmilla. Striped marlin are giving us solid shots every day, with tuna spread out in the same zone. Mahi mahi (dorado) and wahoo are around, but in lower numbers, so we are focusing most of our effort on marlin and tuna.

What’s Biting Right Now

  • Striped Marlin (Rayado): Good action, multiple chances per day when conditions line up.
  • Yellowfin Tuna: Smaller school-size tuna are very reliable and close to the same area.
  • Mahi Mahi (Dorado): A bit slow at the moment, about 20% chance on a regular trip.
  • Wahoo: Lower probability, around 10% chance, but always possible as a bonus fish.

Tuna Action – Great Option for All Anglers

Tuna fishing has been very productive on the inshore/offshore edge, especially for school-size yellowfin tuna. These fish are perfect for visiting anglers who want steady action and great fillets for dinner. We are working the same general areas off Iman Bank, sliding and chumming to bring the tuna into range.

Striped Marlin – Good Action off Palmilla

Striped marlin have been active around the same offshore structure near Iman Bank and Chawuitas. We are seeing consistent shots at marlin when the current and bait lines are right. The 28ft Habanero has been doing very well trolling lures and live bait in these areas.

What We Recommend by Experience Level

Tourist / Casual Anglers

If you are visiting Los Cabos and want a fun day on the water with good chances of success, we recommend focusing on:

  • Striped marlin – exciting surface action and great photos.
  • Smaller tuna – steady bites and delicious fillets to take back.

This combination gives you high probability of action without needing to fish extremely long hours.

Experienced / Hardcore Anglers

For more experienced anglers who want to work hard for a trophy fish, there are yellowfin tuna over 100 lb in the zone.

  • We strongly recommend longer trips to give ourselves enough time to locate and work these bigger fish.
  • Be ready to grind – sometimes it takes extra time and patience to land a true trophy tuna.
  • Heavier tackle and good technique are important for these fish.

If your goal is a big tuna, let us know in advance so we can plan the right boat, gear, and strategy.

Techniques That Are Working Now

  • Marlin: Trolling lures and rigged ballyhoo, switching to live bait when fish show on the surface or on the sonar.
  • Tuna: Chumming and drifting with live or cut bait around bird schools, porpoise, and life in the area.
  • Mahi & Wahoo: High-speed trolling and working temperature breaks, but they are less consistent at the moment.
  • Light tackle: For smaller tuna and school fish, lighter setups make the fight more exciting and fun.

Captain’s Recommendations

  • Start early: Leaving the dock at 6:10 AM gives us the best chance to find fish before the wind picks up.
  • Be flexible: Conditions change quickly; sometimes switching from marlin to tuna (or the opposite) is the key to a great day.
  • Tell us your priority: Photos with marlin, meat for the cooler, or a chance at a trophy tuna – your goal shapes our plan.

Weather & Sea Conditions

Right now, we are fishing in comfortable sea conditions most mornings, with more breeze usually picking up later in the day. As always, conditions can change, so we recommend checking with us the day before your trip for the latest:

  • Typical mornings are the calmest and most productive time to be on the water.
  • Afternoons can see more wind and chop, depending on the day.
  • If you are sensitive to motion, morning trips are strongly recommended.

Keeping Fish & Catch and Release – Our Philosophy

At Daliken Sportfishing, we believe in enjoying the catch and also protecting our fishery for the future.

  • We encourage our guests to keep only the fish they truly need for meals and to share with friends and family.
  • We highly support catch and release, especially for billfish like marlin, so that future generations can enjoy the same great fishing.
  • We do not restrict you beyond the legal limits, but if you’d like to collaborate with conservation, releasing some fish is always appreciated and very important for the health of our local fishery.

Responsible fishing helps ensure we can continue to offer excellent action year after year here in Los Cabos.
