San José del Cabo Fishing Report (Grouper, Roosterfish, Mahi Mahi, Tuna)

San José del Cabo Fishing Report (Grouper, Roosterfish, Mahi Mahi, Tuna)

Updated: March 2026. Departures from Puerto Los Cabos Marina, San José del Cabo.

Quick report: In March we are seeing a strong mixed bite. Grouper action improves on structure and rocky bottom, roosterfish show along beaches and points, mahi mahi pop up around warm current lines, and tuna range from smaller fast-action fish to occasional better-grade schools offshore. Conditions have been comfortable with mostly manageable wind and clean water pockets moving through the area.

Local noteWater temps have been running mid-70s with warmer pockets that can spark mahi and tuna activity

What We’re Seeing Right Now

Grouper: The bottom bite gets better when we set up on rocky structure and ledges. If you want grouper, tell us early and we will plan the day around bottom zones and drift speed.

Roosterfish: Roosters are showing along beach lines and points. The best windows are usually early morning with good bait presence. We work poppers, live bait, and nearshore edges depending on conditions.

Mahi Mahi (Dorado): Mahi can be streaky in March, but when warmer current edges push in, they show up around floating debris, birds, and color breaks. When we find a good water line, it can turn on fast.

Tuna: Tuna action ranges from smaller tuna and bonito-style fast bites to occasional better fish when we find the right temp break and bird activity. Full day trips give you the best chance.

Captain’s Plan (Simple & Effective)

  • Start early and run straight to the best water/structure for the day.
  • If we see current lines and birds, we prioritize tuna and mahi first.
  • When conditions call for it, we switch to bottom fishing for grouper on proven spots.
  • For roosterfish, we finish nearshore where bait is holding on the beach line.

Our Recommendation

If you want the best odds for tuna and mahi, book an 8-hour trip so we can hunt the right water and stay on a bite when it happens. If your main goal is roosterfish + grouper, a 6-hour trip is often perfect because we can work the inshore zone and structure efficiently.

We run the plan based on real-time conditions each morning, and we adjust fast. That is how we keep your day productive.

FAQ (Fast Answers)

Should we book 6 hours or 8 hours for tuna and mahi?
For tuna and mahi, 8 hours is the best choice because we can search wider for the right water and stay on a bite when it turns on. If your priority is roosterfish plus bottom fishing, 6 hours can be perfect.
Can we target roosterfish and grouper in the same trip?
Yes. We typically start with bottom structure for grouper, then work the beach line and points for roosterfish. The exact order depends on wind, bait, and tides that morning.
What should we bring?
Sunscreen, hat, polarized sunglasses, light jacket, snacks, and any motion-sickness prevention if you need it. We recommend comfortable shoes with good grip.
Do you provide bait and fishing licenses?
We can help you arrange both. Let us know before your trip so we have everything ready at check-in.
What if the bite is slow?
We change tactics fast: different zones, different depths, switching between trolling edges, live bait, and bottom structure. The goal is always to keep the day productive and fun.
