The Los Cabos Local Guide

By a working captain in San José del Cabo

Honest, practical, written from the docks. We are out on the water here every morning. This guide is what we tell our charter guests when they ask us how to actually use Los Cabos: where to stay, when to come, what is real, what is hype.

Most Los Cabos guides are written by people who flew in for a weekend or never left their resort. We live and operate out of Puerto Los Cabos. We see the marina at sunrise, the fishing grounds in every season, the towns at every hour. This guide reflects that, not a brochure version of the place.

The Five Pillars

The guide is organized around five core areas, each focused on the coastal and maritime side of Los Cabos. New pieces are added every month.

Puerto Los Cabos Marina

Everything about the working marina in San José del Cabo. Where most of our charters depart, where the Gordo Banks fleet operates, where you can eat with a view of the boats coming in.

San José del Cabo

The historic side of Los Cabos. Cobblestone streets, art galleries, the food scene, the waterfront, and the part of town that still feels like Mexico.

The practical questions that come up before every trip. Where to stay, how to get from the airport, safety, what to pack, and how to choose between Cabo's two towns.

Why This Guide Exists

The most-read Los Cabos guide on the internet has not been seriously updated in years. The owner retired. Phone numbers from 2001 are still listed. Hotels that closed during the pandemic are still featured.

Meanwhile, the towns themselves have changed. New restaurants opened. The waterfront in San José del Cabo got remodeled. Puerto Los Cabos Marina expanded. The fishing seasons shifted with warming water. None of that is reflected in the guides most travelers find first.

We started this guide because we live here, we work on the water here, and we have answered the same questions from charter guests for years. This is the guide we wish existed when our guests were planning their trips. It is updated regularly, written from first-hand experience, and focused on what actually matters when you arrive.

We are San Jose del Cabo Sportfishing Charters, a working sport fishing operation based at Puerto Los Cabos Marina. The guide is not about us, but it is informed by what we see every day on the docks and on the water.

Planning a Fishing Trip?

The guide is free. The fishing is what we do. If you are coming to Los Cabos for the water, we run charters from Puerto Los Cabos Marina, the closest marina to the Gordo Banks.
