Wahoo Fishing in San Jose del Cabo
Private high-speed trolling charters from Puerto Los Cabos Marina, peak season October through February
Cabo waters hold the IGFA all tackle world record wahoo, a 184 pound fish caught off Cabo San Lucas in 2005. Peak season runs October through February when cooler water concentrates wahoo at Gordo Banks, known locally as The Wahoo Banks. Daliken Sportfishing runs private high speed trolling charters from Puerto Los Cabos Marina.
Why Cabo Is World Class for Wahoo
Wahoo are one of the fastest fish in the ocean and one of the most explosive bites in sportfishing. A reel screams, line vanishes at impossible speed, and an angler has about three seconds to react before the fight is on. Cabo waters are home to the IGFA all tackle world record for the species, set in 2005 just south of where our boats fish today.
At Daliken Sportfishing we run dedicated wahoo trips during peak season using high speed trolling techniques, the right tackle to handle their razor sharp teeth, and the local knowledge of where wahoo stack each month. The Gordo Banks system is so productive for this species that locals call it The Wahoo Banks.
About the Pacific Wahoo
The wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri), known as ono in Hawaii (meaning delicious) and peto in some Spanish speaking regions, is a member of the mackerel family according to NOAA Fisheries. Wahoo are circumtropical, distributed in Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. They are solitary or travel in small groups, hunt aggressively, and are built for raw speed.
Documented at lengths up to 8 feet and weights up to 183 pounds, wahoo can reach burst speeds of approximately 60 miles per hour, putting them among the fastest fish in the ocean alongside marlin and sailfish.
184 Pounds, Caught Off Cabo San Lucas
On July 29, 2005, fifteen year old Sara Hayward landed the current IGFA all tackle world record wahoo while trolling skirted lures off Cabo San Lucas. The fight lasted 35 minutes. The record has stood for nearly 20 years and is one of the strongest pieces of evidence for what these waters are capable of producing.
What makes wahoo unique
- One of the fastest fish in the ocean, reaching burst speeds near 60 miles per hour
- 24 to 30 cobalt blue vertical bars along the body that disappear quickly after death
- Razor sharp teeth that require wire leaders on every rig
- Solitary hunter, single hookups are common but multiple fish can be raised over structure
- Among the finest table fish in the ocean, firm white flesh with mild flavor
Wahoo Season in San Jose del Cabo
Wahoo are caught year round in Cabo waters, but the species really turns on when surface temperatures drop in late fall. Cooler water concentrates wahoo on offshore structure where they hunt bait stacks aggressively. November through February is the prime window for dedicated wahoo trips.
Why winter is the sweet spot
As Pacific water cools in late fall, wahoo move into the structure around Gordo Banks and Iman Bank. Bait concentrations build, water clarity improves, and the wahoo bite becomes consistent enough to plan dedicated trips around. November and December historically produce the most consistent action, with January and February delivering bigger fish on average.
The Wahoo Banks and Other Productive Zones
The Gordo Banks system is so productive for this species that locals refer to it as The Wahoo Banks. Our captains work the structure in patterns optimized for wahoo, hitting drop offs and current edges at the right speed to trigger strikes.
Gordo Banks (The Wahoo Banks)
The primary target for wahoo trips from Puerto Los Cabos Marina. The seamount structure concentrates bait year round but really shines during cooler months. The inner and outer banks both produce wahoo during peak season.
Iman Bank
A productive secondary zone further offshore that holds wahoo when conditions are right. Worth the longer run on a full day trip during peak season, especially when Gordo Banks is pressured by other boats.
Current Edges & Drop Offs
Wahoo respond to temperature breaks and clean blue water against greener inshore water. Our captains work these edges between the banks when the structure bite slows, often raising fish on the transit.
Best Boats for Wahoo in Our Fleet
Wahoo trips require boats that handle high speed trolling smoothly and carry the right tackle for an explosive fight. Two offshore boats in our fleet are built for this work, with a comfort option for groups that prefer a smaller platform.
Tiara
Our top recommendation for serious wahoo trips. Premium sportfisher with the power to maintain 12 to 15 knots through the spread, the stability for stand up fights, and the deck space for proper wahoo tackle. The first call when wahoo is the priority.
ContactAbamar
Reliable offshore workhorse that handles high speed trolling well. Strong choice for mixed bag days that combine wahoo at Gordo Banks with marlin or tuna. Comfortable for full day trips during peak winter season.
ContactHabanero
Comfort option with onboard restroom and shade. Effective for wahoo on calm winter mornings at the inner Gordo Banks. Family friendly choice and a solid platform for shorter wahoo trips when conditions are mild.
From $450 ContactTackle and Technique for Wahoo
Wahoo fishing is a specialized game. The right speed, the right depth, the right lure, and wire leaders on every rig. Our boats run with the setup that has produced wahoo at Cabo for decades, refined for the specific conditions at Gordo Banks.
High speed trolling
- Trolling speed 12 to 15 knots, significantly faster than the 7 to 9 knots used for marlin and tuna
- Jet head lures and Marauders in blue and white, red and black, and purple in the spread
- Cedar plugs and rigged ballyhoo as supporting baits
- Planers and trolling weights to get baits to the depth where wahoo strike
Wire leaders are mandatory
- Razor sharp wahoo teeth slice through fluorocarbon and mono on first contact
- Single strand wire 80 to 150 pound test is the standard
- Multi strand cable for the toughest hookups
Tackle
- 50 to 80 pound class conventional reels with high speed retrieve
- Heavy stand up rods rated for trolling at speed
- Strong drag systems, wahoo dump line on the initial run
The Captains Who Run Our Wahoo Trips
Wahoo trips reward captains who know the structure intimately and can read the conditions that bring fish to the bite. Where to start the morning, when to switch lures, how fast to push, when to relocate. Our captains have been working these waters for decades.
Pancho
One of our most experienced offshore captains and a specialist in reading the structure at Gordo Banks. Pancho excels at setting the right spread and trolling pattern to convert wahoo strikes during peak winter season.
Hollywood
Second generation fisherman born and raised in San Jose del Cabo, with over 35 years on these waters. Hollywood is bilingual, calm under pressure, and has guided countless wahoo trips through every phase of the season.
Ulices
Tournament minded captain with a track record across all offshore species at Cabo. Ulices runs efficient days, knows when to commit to a zone, and consistently delivers wahoo action during the cooler months.
Catch Limits and the Ono Reputation
Wahoo populations are managed under cooperative fisheries agreements across the Pacific. According to NOAA Fisheries, the species is harvested sustainably under U.S. regulations and Mexican rules apply similar conservation principles. Daliken Sportfishing follows local bag limits and supports responsible practices.
Wahoo are widely considered one of the finest eating fish in the ocean. The flesh is firm, white, and mild flavored, taking well to grilling, ceviche, sashimi, or pan seared. Daliken offers free filleting at the marina after the trip and optional vacuum sealing and freezing for $2 USD per pound so the catch travels well.
