Fishing Report – Offshore Opportunity + Nearshore Action

A practical, captain-style update with techniques and how we approach the day. Conditions can change fast in Cabo, so we fish smart: we start early, find clean water, and adjust the plan to keep you tight.

Captain’s quick take: If your goal is tuna/dorado with a shot at striped marlin, pick a full-day and depart early. If you want action without running far, go nearshore in the morning on a super panga.

What’s biting right now

When we get stable weather and clean water lanes, offshore can be very productive. If the ocean turns “off-color” or gets choppy, we shift closer to keep rods bent and make the trip enjoyable.

  • Yellowfin Tuna Best around bird activity, foamers, and current breaks. Once we locate fish, we work the zone instead of running nonstop.
  • Dorado (Mahi-Mahi) Often found on edges and structure (weed lines / floating debris). Great “action fish” and excellent eating.
  • Wahoo (bonus fish) Not every day, but when it shows up it’s fast and aggressive—trolling and high-speed passes can pay.
  • Striped Marlin We watch for clean water, bait, and life on the surface. A full-day gives you the time to actually hunt them.
  • Nearshore action (Roosterfish / Sierra / Reef mix) Perfect for light tackle and for guests who don’t want to run far. Early morning nearshore is often the most consistent.

Techniques we use (and when they work best)

We don’t “one-style” Cabo. We rotate techniques based on water color, bait presence, and what the fish are doing. Here are the most common setups we use to maximize your day:

Trolling (search mode)

We cover ground to find life—birds, bait balls, current lines, and temperature edges. Great for dorado and wahoo, and to locate marlin zones.

Best for: Finding fish

Live bait / slow-troll

When we mark fish or see surface activity, live bait can trigger bites fast. This is a go-to approach for tuna and marlin when conditions line up.

Best for: Tuna / Marlin chances

Chunking / steady chum

If tuna are in the area but shy, we hold position and work a controlled chum line (when available). Patience here can turn into the best bite of the day.

Best for: “Turn them on”

Jigging (when fish are deeper)

When tuna or reef predators are holding down, vertical jigging can be very effective. Great for anglers who want a more active technique.

Best for: Active anglers

Casting nearshore (light tackle)

For roosterfish and sierra, we work structure and the surf line. Early morning with cleaner water is usually your best window.

Best for: Roosterfish vibes

Plan B that saves trips

If offshore isn’t giving, we don’t waste the day. We switch zones and targets to keep action going—nearshore, reefs, and mixed fishing.

Best for: Consistent action

Captain recommendations (simple, proven)

  • Start early. The first hours are often the most productive—especially for nearshore and for setting up an offshore hunt before the ocean changes.
  • Choose full-day if you want “big fish odds.” Marlin and bigger tuna often take time to locate. Full-day gives you the range to chase clean water and bait concentrations.
  • Tell us your goal before we leave the dock. “Meat trip” (tuna/dorado) vs “trophy hunt” (marlin). We rig and plan the route differently.
  • Be ready for quick changes. Cabo fishing is dynamic—wind, current and water color can flip. We adjust tactics fast (troll → bait → jig → nearshore).
  • What to bring. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a light jacket (early), snacks/drinks you like, and a good attitude—our crew handles the rest.
