This is peak summer in Los Cabos and the heat is no joke. The water is very warm right now, and that has pushed the tuna off their usual pattern. They are still out there around the porpoise schools, but the bite has been inconsistent, so tuna is a hunt with no guarantees this week. On the flip side, the warm blue water has the billfish fired up, and the blue marlin and sailfish bite has been strong. We are on a building waxing gibbous moon heading toward the full moon, so the tides are increasing toward the spring range with stronger current, which the marlin use to feed.

It is very hot out there right now. Peak summer sun in Los Cabos is intense on the water, so come prepared: bring sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water. We keep the boat stocked, but the heat this time of year is serious, and staying hydrated and covered up is the difference between a great day and a rough one. The early morning is not just the best bite, it is also the most comfortable time to fish.
Blue Marlin Strong: 200 to 300 Pounds
The heat has the billfish going. Blue marlin are active in the 200 to 300 pound class, a fantastic size range for a serious fight that still comes up in the spread. The warm blue water offshore is exactly what these fish want, and trolling lures and rigged ballyhoo is raising them, with a pitch bait ready for the ones that light up on the teasers. Alongside the blues, the sailfish are active too, adding their spectacular tail-walking fights to the offshore bite. When the tuna slow down in the heat, the billfish more than pick up the slack.

Blue Marlin and Sailfish
The headline. Blue marlin strong in the 200 to 300 lb class on the warm blue water, with sailfish active alongside them. Trolling lures and rigged ballyhoo, pitch bait ready. We ask that all sailfish be released, photo and back in the water. The billfish are carrying the offshore bite this week.
Yellowfin Tuna
The tough one this week. The very warm water has slowed the tuna bite considerably. You can still look for them around the porpoise schools offshore, but there are no guarantees right now. Boats making the run and finding the pods might get a shot, but the tuna are off their pattern in the heat.
Roosterfish and Jacks
Reliable inshore action. Roosterfish and jack crevalle are working the shoreline, a great light tackle option that does not require the long offshore run. Live caballito and green jacks are the ticket. All roosterfish released. When the offshore is a hunt, the beach is the sure thing right now.
Dorado
The dorado bite has slowed with the heat, but here is the upside: when they do show, they have been good size. More of a quality-over-quantity fish this week, coming while trolling for marlin on lures and ballyhoo. Any dorado that eats is a welcome bonus and some of the best eating in the ocean.
Roosterfish and Jacks Still Going on the Beach
When the offshore turns into a hunt, the shoreline is the reliable play. Roosterfish and jacks are still active along the beach, giving anglers a great light tackle fight close to the marina and out of the worst of the offshore heat. Live caballito and green jacks are producing, and every rooster is released. Perfect for families, beginners, or anyone who wants steady action on a hot summer day.
Chase the Billfish, Fish Early, Stay Cool
With the water this warm, my honest advice is to focus on what is working: the billfish. We leave the marina at first light, run to the warm blue water, and troll lures and rigged ballyhoo for the blue marlin and sailfish, which are the strong bite right now. If you want to gamble on tuna we can look around the porpoise, but I will be straight with you, it is a hunt with no promises in this heat. Prefer a sure thing? The roosterfish inshore are reliable and a blast on light tackle. Whatever you choose, get out early. The morning is the best bite and the coolest part of the day. And please, release the sailfish, a photo and back in the water. Bring sunscreen, a hat and lots of water, because the sun is intense out there right now.
