Los Cabos fishing report June 1

June opened strong out of Puerto Los Cabos Marina. Wahoo on the troll, roosterfish along the beach, dorado and tuna offshore, and the striped marlin bite is still on. The catch this morning was a real mixed bag and a great start to the summer season in Los Cabos. We are also seeing one of the realities that comes with early summer: a heavy shark presence working the bait, but the right tactics still put fish in the boat.

The water is warming into the early summer range and the species count is climbing with it. June in Los Cabos is the start of the wahoo, mahi mahi and yellowfin tuna build-up, and the striped marlin window is not closed yet. Calm mornings give the captains the run they need to cover ground before the south breeze fills in around midday.

The Strategy

With five species in play today and a high-pressure shark situation offshore, the game was about coverage, speed and adjusting on the fly.

Wide Spread for the Mixed Bag

A multi-species trolling spread did the heavy lifting: skirted lures and cedar plugs for tuna, rigged ballyhoo and bullet heads for wahoo and dorado, plus a marlin-grade bait deeper in the pattern. Roosterfish came inshore on live bait at first light along the beach.

Working Through the Sharks

When sharks crash the bite the move is to fight fish hard and fast, move zones the moment we see shark activity, and stay flexible. We kept the spread tight and the crew ready to clear lines and reposition the boat the moment a fin showed up.

On the Water Today

Shark pressure was real. Bait is stacking up at the offshore banks and the sharks are following it. That is part of summer fishing in Los Cabos when the food chain lights up. The crews managed it by moving zones, fighting fish quickly and pulling baits when needed. Knowing it is happening is half the battle, and we still came home with a real mixed bag.

The productive water today ran across Iman Bank, the offshore edge north of the marina, and inshore along the East Cape beach line. Wahoo hit on faster troll speeds, dorado worked the color changes, and tuna stayed on the bait schools when the sharks let them.

Captain's Recommendation

Mixed Bag is Real, Be Ready to Move

Right now Los Cabos is loaded with fish, but it is also loaded with sharks following the bait. The play is to leave the marina at 6:10 am, work inshore for roosterfish at first light, then push offshore with a wide spread. When sharks show up, do not fight it, move. The water is big and the bite is on. We are landing wahoo, dorado, tuna, striped marlin and gallos this week and the next several weeks should keep producing as we move deeper into summer.

Tackle and Gear

What We Ran Today

  • Wahoo setup: 50 to 80 lb test with wire leaders, bullet heads and high-speed lures pulled at 12 to 15 knots, plus rigged ballyhoo on the wire
  • Tuna setup: 50 to 80 lb test, cedar plugs and feathers for trolling, live sardines and squid strips when fish get selective
  • Marlin setup: 80 to 130 lb test rods, 200 to 400 lb leaders, rigged ballyhoo and skirted trolling heads, pitch rod with live caballito ready
  • Dorado setup: 30 to 50 lb test, 40 to 60 lb leaders, small skirted lures, pink and green heads producing strikes
  • Roosterfish setup: spinning gear with 30 to 50 lb braid, live mullet and sardines along the East Cape beach
  • For shark pressure: we keep extra wire leaders rigged and ready, and our crews work fast to land and release fish before sharks zero in

June is opening with wahoo, gallos, dorado, tuna and marlin all on the same day. That is the kind of variety that makes Los Cabos one of the top sportfishing destinations in the world. Sharks are part of it. Knowing how to handle them is part of the job.
