Los Cabos fishing report May 28

Thursday gave us the best of both worlds out of Puerto Los Cabos Marina. The roosterfish bite lit up along the inshore beach line, with some beautiful gallos brought boatside and released, while the offshore grounds kept producing as the late May pattern holds strong. If you want a shot at the most iconic inshore gamefish in Los Cabos, right now is the time.

Warm, clean inshore water along the East Cape beach line is exactly what brings roosterfish up to feed in late spring. The calm morning conditions let our crews work the sand and rocky points right at first light, when the gallos are most aggressive, before running offshore for the rest of the day.

The Strategy

Today was a two-zone game. Inshore at first light for roosterfish, then offshore to stay on the tuna, marlin and dorado that continue to produce through the end of May.

Inshore for Roosterfish

Roosterfish hold along the beach line and rocky points. We slow-trolled and pitched live bait, mullet and sardines, into the wash and sight cast to cruising fish. When a gallo lights up behind a bait the take is explosive. All roosterfish were released to protect the fishery.

Offshore for the Rest

Once the sun was up we ran the offshore spread of skirted lures, cedar plugs and rigged ballyhoo. Tuna, dorado and the continuing striped marlin bite kept the second half of the day busy on the troll.

The inshore action ran along the East Cape beach line and rocky points, while offshore the productive zones around Gordo Banks, Iman Bank and La Fortuna continue to hold fish. A single trip can cover both if you start early.

Captain's Recommendation

Hit the Beach at First Light for Gallos

Roosterfish are a first-light game. The move right now is to start inshore the moment we leave the marina, work the beach line and points while the water is calm and the gallos are feeding, then push offshore once the inshore bite slows. Roosterfish are one of the hardest-fighting fish in Los Cabos pound for pound, and we release every one. If a gallo on light tackle is on your bucket list, do not wait.

Tackle and Gear

What We Ran Today

  • Roosterfish setup: spinning gear with 30 to 50 lb braid, live mullet and sardines, and topwater poppers for surface strikes along the beach
  • Tuna setup: 50 to 80 lb test, cedar plugs and feathers for trolling, live sardines when fish get selective
  • Marlin setup: 80 to 130 lb test rods, 200 to 400 lb leaders, rigged ballyhoo and skirted trolling heads
  • Dorado setup: 30 to 50 lb test, 40 to 60 lb leaders, small skirted lures, pink and green heads producing
  • On every boat: a live well stocked with bait, a pitch rod ready inshore and a full troll spread for the offshore run

A morning of roosterfish on the beach followed by tuna, marlin and dorado offshore is about as complete as a day in Los Cabos gets. Late May is delivering it right now, and the gallos are biting.
