Daliken Fishing Charters San José del Cabo

Los Cabos fishing report June 15

Dorado are running the show out of Puerto Los Cabos Marina to start the week. Monday brought steady mahi mahi action with quality fish, gallos working the beach line inshore, the occasional wahoo screaming line off the reel, and marlin still in the picture for the boats willing to work for them. The summer season is settling in, the water is blue, and the variety is exactly what makes this time of year in Los Cabos so good.

The water is blue and full of life right now. The dorado and wahoo bite has been the highlight across the fleet this week, while the marlin are around but feeding selectively, often chasing bait down deep where they are harder to tempt. That mix rewards a boat that reads the water and stays flexible, which is exactly how our captains run a day like today.

The Strategy

Dorado were the anchor of the day, but a smart spread kept every other species in play.

Dorado on the Edges

The mahi mahi are working the color changes and any floating structure offshore. We trolled small skirted lures in bright colors and rigged ballyhoo on lighter line, slowing down whenever we hit clean water meeting dirty or spotted frigates working bait. Quality fish in the 20 to 25 lb range came over the rail and the school often follows the first hookup, so we kept light tackle ready.

Wahoo, Gallos and Marlin

Wahoo showed up fast and hard on the troll, so we ran a wire-leadered bait in the spread to be ready. Inshore at first light the roosterfish patrolled the beach for anglers who wanted that fight on light tackle. For marlin, the selective bite meant patience: working the teasers and pitching live bait to any fish that came up to investigate.

Most of the offshore action is happening on the productive grounds within a comfortable run from the marina, with the dorado relating to current edges and structure. Inshore, the East Cape beach line continues to hold gallos for a quick light tackle session before or after the offshore push.

Captain's Recommendation

Lean Into the Dorado, Stay Ready for Everything Else

This is a dorado week, and that is good news for almost everyone. Mahi mahi are fast, beautiful, jump like crazy and are some of the best eating in the ocean, perfect for families and first timers. The play is to load up on live bait, leave the marina at 6:10 am, and work the offshore edges for dorado with a wahoo bait in the spread and a marlin setup ready. Want a little inshore action too? We can start on the beach for gallos at first light. The variety right now is excellent, so come with an open mind and we will put you on whatever is biting hardest that morning.

Tackle and Gear

What We Ran Today

  • Dorado setup: 30 to 50 lb test, 40 to 60 lb mono leaders, small skirted lures in pink, green and yellow, plus rigged ballyhoo on the flat lines
  • Wahoo setup: 50 to 80 lb test with wire leaders, bullet heads and high-speed lures ready to pull faster when wahoo show on the spread
  • Marlin setup: 80 to 130 lb test rods, 200 to 400 lb leaders, teasers pulled tight in the wash and a pitch rod with live caballito for selective fish
  • Roosterfish setup: spinning gear with 30 to 50 lb braid, live mullet and sardines along the East Cape beach line
  • Bait: a live well stocked with sardines, which have been plentiful and a good size this week
  • Trolling speeds: 6 to 8 knots on the dorado spread, ready to push to 12 to 15 knots if the wahoo turn on

Dorado leading, gallos on the beach, wahoo and marlin in the mix. The summer season is settling in across Los Cabos and the variety on the water right now is hard to beat.
