The summer bite is in full swing out of Puerto Los Cabos Marina, and Friday gave us a true mixed-bag day. Dorado remain the most reliable target on the grounds, wahoo are showing for the boats covering water, and there is so much marlin around right now that you can run into multiple fish in a single morning, even if they have been picky about eating. Add the inshore roosterfish and jacks close to the marina and you have one of the most complete fishing windows of the year in Los Cabos.

Today's Conditions
This is classic mid-June in Los Cabos. The water has settled into the upper 70s on the Sea of Cortez side, with cooler blue water pushing in on the offshore Pacific edges where a lot of the dorado and marlin are holding. South wind has come up on some mornings and pushed greener water in close, so reading the water color and getting an early start matter more than ever. The fish are here in numbers, it is about putting the boat in the right water at the right time.
The Bite Right Now, Species by Species
There is a lot happening on the water this week. Here is the honest breakdown of what our crews and the rest of the fleet are seeing across the grounds from Vinorama to the Gordo Banks and out to the offshore banks.
Dorado: The Most Reliable Bite
Mahi mahi continue to be the bread and butter right now. Quality fish in the 18 to 40 lb class are coming on rigged ballyhoo and trolled lures, with the bigger 30 to 40 lb fish showing on the offshore banks. We are starting to see smaller females closer to shore, and since dorado grow incredibly fast, we release the small ones to keep the fishery strong.
Wahoo: On the Grounds
Wahoo are in the mix for boats covering water, in the 35 to 50 lb range on rigged ballyhoo, lures and Rapalas. They are not stacked up, but they are around, and a wire-leadered bait in the spread is the way to be ready. One marina even saw a 119 lb wahoo come in recently, a reminder of what is possible out here.
Marlin: Everywhere but Selective
The striped marlin numbers are incredible right now. It is not unusual to spot fish all day, with multiple stripers feeding on the surface at once. The catch is that they have been very selective, often refusing both live and dead bait. Patience, teasers and a well-presented pitch bait are the difference between a sighting and a hookup.
Tuna and Inshore
Yellowfin tuna are holding from Vinorama to San Luis on live sardines, mostly 10 to 20 lb with some 30 to 40 lb fish in the mix, though they have been finicky. Inshore stays productive for roosterfish, bonita and jack crevalle along the rocky points and beach line close to the marina.
Sharks have been active on the grounds. When the bait stacks up the sharks follow, and some boats have lost tuna and dorado boatside during longer fights. Our crews manage it by fighting fish fast and moving zones when the sharks zero in. It is part of summer fishing in Los Cabos, and knowing it is happening is half the battle.
Cover Water, Read the Color, Stay Flexible
With this much variety, the play is to leave the marina at 6:10 am and cover ground with a mixed spread: rigged ballyhoo and lures for dorado and wahoo, a wire bait ready, and a pitch rod with live bait for any marlin that comes up. Watch the water color closely, because the cleaner blue water is where the fish are concentrating. If you want the best odds at putting fish in the box, dorado is the target. If you want the thrill of casting at marlin you can see, this is one of the best weeks of the year for it. Either way, an early start and an open game plan win the day.
Tackle and Gear
What We Ran Today
- Dorado setup: 30 to 50 lb test, 40 to 60 lb mono leaders, rigged ballyhoo and small skirted lures in bright colors worked along the color changes
- Wahoo setup: 50 to 80 lb test with wire leaders, bullet heads, Rapalas and high-speed lures ready to pull faster when wahoo show
- Marlin setup: 80 to 130 lb test rods, 200 to 400 lb leaders, teasers and dredges to raise fish, and a pitch rod loaded with live caballito for the selective ones
- Tuna setup: 30 to 50 lb test with live sardines slow-trolled or drifted over the bait schools from Vinorama to San Luis
- Inshore setup: spinning gear with 30 to 50 lb braid, live mullet and sardines for roosterfish along the beach
- Bait: live sardines have been the key bait, plentiful and a good size this week
Dorado in the box, wahoo in the spread, and more marlin than you can cast to. Mid-June in Los Cabos is delivering the kind of variety that keeps anglers coming back, and the season is only building from here.
